Houston is full of museums, cultural centers and attractions. Whether you’re planning a family outing, a date night or a solo adventure, Houston has plenty of places worth exploring. Ticket prices to these experiences can quickly add up, especially if you’re bringing along friends and family. Luckily, some of Houston’s must-sees have free admission days, so you don’t have to break the bank to see all the city has to offer.
While you’re exploring, ditch the car and opt for the train instead. Take the light rail to get around—it drives through downtown and into the Museum District.

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT FOR OAK MEADOWS PARK!
Our special guest and sponsor, Port Houston, will present its Anchored in Action Community Investment Plan, with a special focus on the Oak Meadows community.
Most importantly, Port Houston will unveil the future improvements planned for Oak Meadows Park!
What improvements could be coming?
✅ A covered basketball court
✅ A covered pavilion on the opposite end of the park
✅ Shade canopies for the children’s playground and play equipment
These are improvements our community has discussed for years, and now is your opportunity to hear the plans firsthand and ask questions.
Last year, only about 30 residents attended Port Houston’s presentation, where conceptual displays and estimated project costs were shared.
Imagine the impact we can make if many more neighbors attend this year.

NO Parking NO Standing Zone on Howard Dr.
Attention Oak Meadows Residents
As the new school year approaches, with classes beginning on August 10, 2026, the Oak Meadows Civic Club has reached out to local law enforcement agencies to discuss increased enforcement of the No Parking / No Standing zone on Howard Drive during student drop-off and pick-up times at Chavez High School.
Residents of Oak Meadows, along with our neighboring communities, has experienced numerous incidents in which emergency vehicles were unable to exit our neighborhoods because parents were illegally parked along Howard Drive while waiting to pick up students. This creates a serious public safety hazard that must be addressed.
In January 2026, I worked closely with the City of Houston to have No Parking No Standing at Any Time signs installed along Howard Drive. These signs were installed to provide law enforcement with the authority to issue citations and, when necessary, tow vehicles parked in violation.
While the additional signage initially improved compliance, the illegal parking gradually resumed and once again become a daily occurrence.
As the new school year begins, we have requested the following:
- Increased enforcement by the Houston Police Department and the Harris County Constable’s Office during morning student drop-off and afternoon dismissal.
- Assistance from Chavez High School in reminding parents and students that parking and standing on Howard Drive is prohibited.
- Encouragement for parents to use the designated student drop-off and pick-up areas located in the school parking lot on the Old Galveston Road side of the campus.
Our goal is not to inconvenience parents. Rather, it is to ensure that emergency vehicles—including police, fire, and EMS—can access and leave our neighborhoods without delay and that traffic remains safe and orderly for residents, students, and motorists alike.
We appreciate the cooperation of parents, students, school officials, and law enforcement as we work together to keep our community safe.

Ante la proximidad del nuevo año escolar, cuyas clases comienzan el 10 de agosto de 2026, el Club Cívico de Oak Meadows (Oak Meadows Civic Club) se ha puesto en contacto con las autoridades locales para solicitar una mayor vigilancia y aplicación de las normas en la zona de prohibición de estacionamiento y detención (*No Parking / No Standing*) de Howard Drive, específicamente durante los horarios de entrada y salida de los estudiantes de la escuela secundaria Chavez High School.
Los residentes de Oak Meadows, así como los de las comunidades vecinas, han experimentado numerosos incidentes en los que los vehículos de emergencia no podían salir de nuestros vecindarios debido a que los padres estacionaban ilegalmente a lo largo de Howard Drive mientras esperaban para recoger a los estudiantes. Esto genera un grave riesgo para la seguridad pública que debe abordarse.
En enero de 2026, colaboré estrechamente con la ciudad de Houston para instalar señales de prohibición de estacionamiento y detención en cualquier momento (*No Parking / No Standing at Any Time*) a lo largo de Howard Drive. Estas señales se colocaron para facultar a las autoridades a emitir multas y, cuando fuera necesario, remolcar los vehículos estacionados ilegalmente.
Si bien la señalización adicional mejoró inicialmente el cumplimiento de las normas, el estacionamiento ilegal volvió a producirse gradualmente hasta convertirse nuevamente en algo cotidiano.
Con el inicio del nuevo año escolar, hemos solicitado lo siguiente:
Una mayor vigilancia por parte del Departamento de Policía de Houston y de la Oficina del Alguacil del Condado de Harris (Harris County Constable’s Office) durante los horarios de entrada por la mañana y salida por la tarde.
La colaboración de Chavez High School para recordar a padres y estudiantes que está prohibido estacionarse o detenerse en Howard Drive.
Que se anime a los padres a utilizar las zonas designadas para dejar y recoger a los estudiantes, ubicadas en el estacionamiento de la escuela, del lado de Old Galveston Road.
Nuestro objetivo no es causar molestias a los padres. Más bien, buscamos garantizar que los vehículos de emergencia —incluidos los de la policía, bomberos y servicios médicos de urgencia (EMS)— puedan entrar y salir de nuestros vecindarios sin demora, y que el tráfico se mantenga seguro y ordenado para residentes, estudiantes y automovilistas por igual.
Agradecemos la cooperación de padres, estudiantes, autoridades escolares y fuerzas del orden mientras trabajamos juntos para mantener segura a nuestra comunidad.

¡Hola, residentes de Oak Meadows!
Ahora que comienza la temporada de vacaciones de verano y los niños están en casa tras terminar las clases, al Club Cívico de Oak Meadows le gustaría compartir algunas ideas para que las comenten con sus familias y vecinos.
¡Octubre será un mes emocionante con dos actividades comunitarias en el parque Oak Meadow!
National Night Out (Noche Nacional de Vigilancia Vecinal) – Martes, 6 de octubre de 2026
El año pasado, colaboramos con la escuela primaria Rucker y celebramos el evento *National Night Out* en las instalaciones de la escuela, bajo la zona techada más cercana al parque. El evento se llevó a cabo de 5:00 p. m. a 7:00 p. m. y brindó a los residentes la oportunidad de conocer a representantes de la oficina del concejal Flickinger, así como a los agentes de policía y oficiales que patrullan nuestro vecindario.
Este año, nos encantaría traer el evento *National Night Out* de vuelta al parque Oak Meadow e incluir vendedores y actividades que hagan su visita aún más agradable.
Halloween en el parque Oak Meadow
El año pasado, su Club Cívico presentó la idea de celebrar Halloween en el parque Oak Meadow. Dado que este año Halloween cae en sábado, creemos que es una oportunidad aún mejor para organizar un evento comunitario lleno de diversión.
Imaginen decorar mesas, crear exhibiciones espeluznantes o casas embrujadas, y contar con la participación de nuestros adolescentes para hacer que el evento sea emocionante para los niños más pequeños. Actualmente contamos con unas 14 mesas en el área del parque, y al Club Cívico le gustaría ofrecer uno o dos premios a las exhibiciones mejor decoradas.
Para que estos eventos sean un éxito, necesitamos su participación. Lo más importante es que queremos crear una experiencia segura, agradable y memorable para los niños y las familias de Oak Meadows.
Por eso comenzamos esta conversación ahora, en julio. Queremos darles a todos tiempo suficiente para compartir ideas, hablar sobre los planes con familiares y vecinos, y decidir cómo podemos hacer que estos eventos sean especiales.
Tenemos un parque hermoso en Oak Meadows y debemos aprovecharlo para unir a nuestra comunidad, crear recuerdos duraderos y ofrecer actividades seguras y divertidas para nuestros niños.

October could be an exciting month with two community activities at Oak Meadow Park!
National Night Out – Tuesday, October 6, 2026
Last year, we partnered with Rucker Elementary School and held National Night Out on the school grounds under the covered area nearest the park. The event took place from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM
and gave residents an opportunity to meet representatives from Councilmember Flickinger’s office, as well as the police officers and constables who make Oak Meadows safe with their patrolling our neighborhood.
This year, we would love to bring National Night Out back into Oak Meadow Park and include vendors and activities that make your visit even more enjoyable.

We currently have approximately 14 tables around the park area, and the Civic Club would like to offer a prize or two for the best-decorated displays.
To make these events successful, we need your participation. Most importantly, we want to create a safe, enjoyable, and memorable experience for the children and families of Oak Meadows.
That is why we are beginning this discussion now, in July. We want to give everyone plenty of time to share ideas, discuss plans with family members and neighbors, and decide how we can make these events special.
We have a beautiful park in Oak Meadows, and we should use it to bring our community together, create lasting memories, and provide safe and fun activities for our children.
